Asymmetry Garden Design
Check out the introduction to the series and this post on point line plane and volume first if you missed them.
Asymmetry garden design. Or a garden may be entirely dependent upon asymmetry. Each garden may contain elements of all three symmetrical balance concepts. The variances make it difficult to scan from left right.
Asymmetry on the other hand is more common than symmetry and is generally considered to be more informal in presentation. Scale there are four distinct scales we can identify in built design. Ensuring proper balance in an asymmetrical design means planning your garden spaces in such a way that you can in fact create balanced plantings.
Our challenge when faced with a garden that does not lend itself to the use of perfect symmetry is to balance the basic building blocks such as our homes fences plants and garden furnishings so that they take advantage of the principle of asymmetry to create balance. Creating patterns with sand or stones is a really common type of art in japanese temples and it is very special. While design trends have focused on a lot of symmetry recently there is likely to be a shift back toward some of this imbalanced balanced design.
Take a moment to review the photos on this page. It is visually intriguing and helps direct users through a design with subtlety. Nature shizen shizen is the ability to use elements patterns or rhythms present on the nature to create designs.
Even the slightest bit of asymmetry can throw off the balance and comfort in a design. I thouht i would just share with you our latest garden design for one of our lovely customers. We have been talking about symmetrical balance.
The variations of garden designs created with these two colored elements is almost infinite. The overall composition helping keep this somewhat overgrown ivy specimen in sync with the rest of the garden. Asymmetry can be a beautiful and harmonious design technique.
